Why Play Pranks?

People who have had bad experiences with practical jokes may think they’re cruel and unkind events, but in truth, a prank can be a fun way to interact with friends, coworkers, family members and other close-knit groups. Many types of groups, in fact, consider pranks an important ritual for introducing new members and making them feel like a part of the group, or pranks may be a rite of passage for groups to perform together. This can include graduating classes, fraternities, bachelor parties, slumber parties, roommates or just good old April Fools jokes. Whatever the reason for staging a prank, however, the most important thing is to choose one that will be fun and safe without being humiliating or causing lasting harm.

Defining Safe Pranks

There are several ways that pranks need to be safe to be fun and effective. While surprise and often embarrassment are typical components of a prank, there are more types of danger than just physical harm. In addition to being physically safe for everyone involved, pranks should not damage a friendship or individual possessions.

Physical Safety

The biggest consideration for safety is, of course, physical safety. While getting knocked on the head or tripping down stairs may seem funny in cartoons or movies, pranks with these types of dangers can result in very serious injuries. A prank should be designed so there is no physical harm to the person being pranked, including inadvertent risks from tripping or falling as they are surprised. When planning a prank, also take care to note the person’s health – playing a surprise prank may not be the best way to wish someone a speedy recovery from a heart attack, for example.

Physical safety should also extend to animals – no animals should be harmed for the sake of a few laughs.

Material Safety

Safe pranks will also be safe for an individual’s possessions. If the prank involves something falling or moving unexpectedly, be sure that any fragile or irreplaceable items are safely out of harm’s way. Items can be temporarily removed or replaced with safer decoys until the prank is over. Also be sure to protect windows or objects that could be inadvertently tipped over. After all, if something valuable or sentimental is accidentally broken, the prank will be much less enjoyable.

Emotional Safety

Because pranks nearly always involve some element of embarrassment, it is important to keep them emotionally safe and in good taste. Intentionally causing humiliation can destroy a friendship, and no relationship is worth a few minutes of embarrassing laughter. It can, however, be difficult to determine if someone will respond poorly to a well-intentioned prank. A good way to judge is to determine whether or not they are able to laugh at their own mishaps, especially when a situation may be embarrassing. If they are often ashamed and unwilling to participate in events that may be embarrassing, they may not be good candidates for pranks that everyone can enjoy.

Safe Ideas for Pranks

Safe pranks, then, will be safe not only physically, but also in terms of nearby possessions and individuals’ emotions. While this may seem to limit the types of pranks that can be arranged, there are many different types of pranks that are safe and fun. Popular ideas include:

  • Fake item: Use fake bug ice cubes, dirt-flavored gum and other false items for a quick laugh.
  • Fill pranks: Fill a locker, close, or cupboard with unexpected items such as balloons, Styrofoam packing peanuts, ping pong balls or popped popcorn.
  • Swap pranks: Substituting someone’s clothing for different sizes, exchanging their food for less tasty alternatives or swapping other unexpected items can be a fun diversion.
  • Removal pranks: Removing a car’s tires, unscrewing light bulbs or removing computer keys or cables can be quick but safe pranks to arrange.
  • Makeup madness: For a morning surprise, adorn a heavy sleeper with crazy makeup and wait for them to glance in the mirror.
  • Do you have the time?: Set an alarm clock to make it seem as if they’re late when really they’re getting up early. The bigger the time discrepancy, the more powerful the prank.
  • Open sesame: Use tape or string to seal a door jamb without interfering with how the door opens. When they open and try to walk through, they won’t find it as easy as they thought.

In Conclusion

Safe pranks are a fun way to add excitement to a party or simply surprise a friend, coworker or family member. By keeping the event safe, everyone is sure to enjoy it and have a laugh about who got the best of whom.

I find some middle school pranks not funny at all. This week an 8th grader placed eye drops into the hot coffee of a teacher at his school. Seeing this done in a movie he thought it would send her into the bathroom for good part of the day. NOT SO FUNNY for her, could have been very bad if he used the wrong type of eye drops. School only did ISS for the teen. I wouldn't have let this slide so easy if I was the Dean of students.

You guys are very right! No prank should have any pain or anything like that involved!

Hi Allan, Unfortunately, there aren't any safety videos online that are humorous ones, with the exception of children's safety videos that need to be entertaining in order to appeal to small children. Sorry!
