The best practical joke ideas are the ones that everyone, including the person being joked, can enjoy. You should never plan a practical joke or prank at someone you are angry with and you should never play a practical joke on someone who doesn't enjoy one.
Safe Practical Joke Ideas
Not everyone cares for a joke being played at his or her expense. Just as some people do not enjoy gag gifts, others do not enjoy jokes. It is always best not to play a joke on someone who has expressly asked you not too. Some great jokes to play on others are the simplest ones.
Home Based Practical Jokes
Remake all the beds in the house so that they are "upside down" with the pillow and top of the covers pointed at the foot of the bed. Then act like it's normal when everyone else notices. If you have time, swap some art around in the house too. It could take them a while to notice, but the looks are always fun when they do.
Shower jokes can be fun, such as pouring a cup of cold water over someone while they are in the shower or squirting them with a squirt gun when they come out. However, be careful, you can make someone fall in a shower if you startle him or her too much. You might also write a fun message on a mirror with your finger so that when it steams up, they will see it.
Food Based Practical Jokes
Whip up a batch of pancakes with wash clothes cooked into the inside (have a real batch ready for after the joke) and serve the toweled pancakes. Watching friends or family try to cut into the pancakes that won't cut will be highly entertaining. You can even dress up the fake pancakes with some fake fruit. Drop some green food dye into a glass of milk. Food dye tends to be mostly tasteless, but pouring yourself a glass and taking a big drink of green milk as someone is just entering can result in comical expressions.
Swap out the sugar for salt (not advisable for some people on their first cup of coffee), but it can be hilarious to see expressions after they've had a chance to wake up some.
Computer Based Practical Jokes
One safe and entertaining practical joke is to unplug someone's mouse when they aren't looking or are away from their desk. Typically, they will shake their mouse and check everything but the connection for a couple of minutes before realizing what isn't working. If they are on a deadline or highly stressed, you might want to avoid this joke.
If you have access to another person's computer, you might reset his or her home page to something funny or fun. For example, a site that pops an animal out or makes a loud noise when loaded can leave them scrambling and laughing. Be sure to keep the reset home page to something meant for genuine fun.
Car Based Practical Jokes
As a good rule of thumb, if the practical joke ideas involve damaging something or leaving it permanently altered, you should avoid doing it. That said, you can do fun practical jokes in the car, such as a whoopee cushion on the driver or passenger seat. If it's dark, they may very well slide in and sit down on the whoopee cushion before realizing that it's there. Be sure never to do this to someone with a bad back or prone to falling as they could hurt themselves if startled too badly.Other safe car jokes include changing the settings on the radio stations to loud music, dropping a different CD in the player. If they have a multi-disc changer, put the same CD in every slot and queue up a fun song. Remember, the idea is to make them laugh and not to frustrate.
