In business since 1987, this personal response company provides service to its members throughout the United States. The protection it offers allows many people to live independently and comfortably in their own homes with a feeling of safety and security instead of having to move into a nursing home or assisted living facility.

The Life Alert Company statistics show that more than two million emergency calls are handled each year by their well-trained emergency response staff. This averages out to a member being saved from an emergency situation, which would have had a catastrophic outcome, once every 26 minutes. During 2008, the total number of members saved from these dire emergency situations was 19,490.

There are two emergency response systems offered by the company. The original Life Alert Classic monitoring system for mature adults and the Life Alert 50+ for members over the age of 50.

A perfect personal response system for senior citizens, the Classic, is the original system offered by the company. This plan provides protection around the clock seven days a week. For elderly seniors, the Classic Alert system provides protection if a medical emergency occurs. Examples of possible medical emergencies include a heart attack, a stroke or a fall. The Classic plan also includes fire protection, protection against carbon monoxide gas poisoning and a 911 cell phone for emergencies that may occur away from home.

If a medical emergency occurs, members enrolled in the Classic plan are able to contact company dispatchers with a simple touch of a button. Once the dispatchers are contacted, they immediately send paramedics to the person’s location.

Generally when an accident or medical emergency occurs, the victim is out of reach of a telephone. Often they remain helpless on the floor unable to move or call for help. Members of the Classic alert plan have their emergency contact button with them in the form of a button on a special pendant or watch.

Fire protection is provided through monitoring of the smoke alarms by the company dispatchers. If smoke or fire is detected, regardless of whether the plan member is at home or away, the dispatcher first contacts the member and then sends help. If the plan member does not answer the hands-free contact from the dispatcher, emergency workers are also sent out.

The smoke detectors used by the company do not just make a noise if smoke is detected as most smoke detectors do. Instead it immediately sends a signal to the dispatching team. It also sends a signal to the monitoring station if its batteries become low. The company then lets the member know it is time to replace the batteries in their smoke detectors.

A gas that is odorless and colorless, carbon monoxide can kill residents in their homes if levels become too high. Members of the Classic plan have carbon monoxide detectors that work in a similar way as smoke detectors do. If a high level of the gas is detected, an alarm signal is sent to the monitoring station, a siren is sounded in the member’s home and the dispatcher immediately sends help.

A special cell phone that contacts 911 at the touch of a large button is provided to members of the Classic plan in case they have an emergency when they are away from home.

Designed for younger adults, the 50+ alert system includes all of the features of the Classic plan in addition to video monitoring as a protection from home invasions. Special day/night cameras are installed in your home that are only activated when you press the help button located on a pendant. Once the button is pressed, dispatchers can hear and see everything that is happening in your home. The dispatcher sends police immediately if needed.
